Distinguished and Famous people from Tooradin
🏨 Matthew Evans
Matthew Evans purchased many Tooradin township lots in 1875 and took over the hotel in 1877. He promoted the district for hunting and fishing, helping position the small settlement as a destination as well as a stopping place on the Western Port road. His interests included buildings around the inlet, and he constructed his own house, Isles View, towards the end of his time there. Tooradin's early commercial growth was closely bound to its waterways, transport routes and visitors, making a hotel proprietor and landholder an influential figure in the developing township.
🐟 Henry and Elizabeth Kernot
Henry Forman Kernot and his wife Elizabeth came to Tooradin from Hastings in 1876, joining the fishing families working the Western Port inlets. Their household belonged to a community whose boats and cottages helped define the early settlement. The district historian David Mickle recorded them among the early arrivals, following fishermen George Casey and Jimmy Miles. Fishing supplied a household livelihood along the inlet, with boats and cottages forming part of the town's early working landscape.
🏫 Adelaide Dredge
Adelaide Dredge was the teacher when Tooradin State School opened on 12 April 1875. The new school was one of the services that accompanied the township's growth during the 1870s, alongside stores, postal facilities and hotels. Her named place in the opening records provides a direct connection with the beginnings of local education. Her classroom served the children of families making their homes around the inlet.
