Tooradin's Local History

Tooradin is a small town located in the southeast of the Australian state of Victoria. The area has a rich history, dating back thousands of years to the indigenous community, the Bunurong people.

The Bunurong People

The Bunurong people were the traditional owners of the land that is now Tooradin. They lived in the area for thousands of years, hunting and gathering food from the land and sea.

The Bunurong people were forced off their land by European settlers in the 1800s, leading to the loss of their traditional way of life.

European Settlement

Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1840s, with many of them being farmers seeking new land to cultivate.

Tooradin was officially surveyed in 1856 and named after the Aboriginal word for "fishing place". The town quickly became a hub for agriculture and fishing in the area, with many people settling in the town.

Fishing Industry

The fishing industry played a significant role in the development of Tooradin. The coastal location of the town made it the perfect place for fishing boats to dock and unload their catches.

During the 1960s, the town became famous for its fishing industry and was even described as the "tuna capital of Australia". Many people visited Tooradin to fish and to taste the local seafood, which was sold in local markets and served in local restaurants.

Modern Day Tooradin

Today, Tooradin is a small town with a population of around 800 people. The town is still known for its fishing industry, but it is also a popular tourist destination, with many people visiting to enjoy the scenic surroundings and to taste the local food.

Despite its small size, Tooradin has a strong sense of community. There are several local community groups and events, including the Tooradin Agricultural Show, which has been held for over 100 years.
